Project Laboratory

Project Laboratory

The Department of Biotechnology encourages research-oriented Project-Based Learning (PBL) and Design Thinking and Innovation (DTI) as part of the curriculum. Students pursue various projects both within their domain and inter-disciplinary. With able guidance and well-equipped laboratories, students perform research in cutting-edge areas of science and technology. Some of the projects which also align with the Sustainable Development Goals include, carbon sequestration using algae, biosensors to detect water pollutants, plastic eating microbes, biopesticides for sustainable farming etc. In addition to DTI and dissertation, to meet the demands of the curriculum wherein minor and major projects, are mandatorily required for successful completion of the program, an exclusive project laboratory has been created. Biotechnology students from across semesters utilize it for executing their projects. They ideate, debate, discuss, perform literature review and write their reports in the project laboratory. The laboratory is well equipped with workbenches and stools. Seamless internet connectivity is available to access relevant resources. This laboratory is actively engaged in advanced research in Plant Molecular Biology, focusing on diverse medicinal plants and forest tree species of ecological and pharmaceutical importance.

The Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering Laboratory

The Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering Laboratory (AT-02) is a practical learning space for students to gain hands-on experience with key molecular biology techniques. Equipped with essential instruments such as PCR Machine + Computer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Sonicator Probe, UV Transilluminator, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Microfuge Centrifuge, Ice Flaking Machine, Deep Freezer (-20oC) and many more euipments to support teaching and research in molecular biology, genetics and recombinant DNA technology. The lab provides a place for students to apply molecular biology concepts, build skills, and explore research problems.

Microbiology Laboratory

Microbiology Lab

The Microbiology Laboratory is a premier core facility, supporting integrated courses in Microbiology and Immunology, the lab empowers students to identify, isolate, and characterize diverse microorganisms. It features sophisticated equipment like an in-situ fermenter, ELISA Reader, lyophilizer and BOD incubators. Practical work includes culture media preparation, bacterial staining, and advanced immuno-techniques such as DOT ELISA and immuno-electrophoresis. This well-equipped environment is dedicated to fostering essential hands-on skills in microbial metabolism, growth kinetics, and immunological analysis.

Biochemistry and Bioanalytical Techniques Laboratory

The Biochemistry and Bioanalytical Techniques Laboratory at MRIIRS, provides a specialized environment for biochemical analysis. Equipped with essential tools like centrifuges, colorimeters, and rotary vacuum evaporators, the lab supports core courses in biochemistry and bioanalytical techniques. Students gain expertise in qualitative and quantitative estimation of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. Key practical skills include enzyme assays, DNA/RNA quantification, and molecular separation using SDS-PAGE and various chromatography. These techniques enable students to effectively characterize biomolecules and integrate analytical processes into broader biotechnological applications.
