Innovative Teaching Learning Practices

Unique Teaching Pedagogy: The five major approaches followed during the teaching are Constructivist, Collaborative, Integrative, Reflective and Inquiry Based Learning. The teaching learning strategies are utilized to follow the pedagogy are depicted below:

1. Course wise Unique Pedagogical Design

Conceptual Scaffolding; Presentation & Peer Learning; Experiential Learning; Flipped Classroom; Hands on Training; Assessment & Feedback; Skill Development.

2. Flipped Classrooms

The Flipped Classroom is adopted as an effective pedagogical method to promote active and student-centered learning. In this approach, students are provided with learning resources such as recorded lectures, reading materials, or videos prior to the class. Classroom time is then utilized for interactive discussions, problem-solving, case studies, and concept clarification.

3. Project /Problem Based Learning

The Project Based Lab (PBL) approach involves conducting laboratory courses through well-defined projects aligned with the Course Outcomes (COs) of the laboratory curriculum. The process flow is as follows:

Virtual Laboratories : The Department of Biotechnology utilizes Virtual Labs developed under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, with contributions from premier institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to support undergraduate training. These virtual laboratories enable students to perform simulation-based biotechnology experiments, access demonstrations, and strengthen conceptual understanding alongside physical laboratory practice for various courses i.e. Bioinformatics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology etc.

Internships: Internships are an integral component of the curriculum, providing students with opportunities to gain practical exposure to industry, research laboratories, and professional environments. Through internships, students apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world problems, develop technical and professional skills, and understand current practices in the biotechnology sector.

Design Thinking & Innovation (DTI) : An experiential learning approach that encourages students to apply interdisciplinary knowledge to identify real-world problems and develop innovative solutions. Through the DTI framework, students engage in critical thinking, literature analysis, problem formulation, and solution design, guided by faculty mentors.

4. Advanced and Slow Learners Measures:

The department adopts differentiated learning strategies to support both advanced and slow learners. Advanced learners are encouraged through research projects, internships, innovation challenges, and participation in seminars and conferences. Slow learners are supported through remedial classes, mentoring, personalized guidance, and additional academic resources to strengthen conceptual understanding and improve performance.
