Brief Profile of research cluster head with picture

Dr. Sandeep Kumar is working as Professor in the Department of Sciences (Physics) at Manav Rachna University (MRU), Faridabad, India. He holds an M.Tech. in Applied Optics and Ph.D. degree in Plasma Physics from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi. After completing his Ph.D., he joined POSTECH, Pohang, South Korea, as a postdoctoral fellow (2006–2009) under the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) fellowship.

From 2009 to 2014, he was associated with the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL). From 2015 to 2016, he served as a senior researcher at the Max Planck Centre for Attosecond Science, Pohang, Korea in collaboration with the MPIPC Systems, Dresden, Germany. From 2016 to 2018, he worked as a senior scientist at the Centre for High Energy Astrophysics, UNIST, and South Korea. His research focuses on photonics, particularly the study of shortest photon pulses in the XUV, soft X-ray, and hard X-ray regimes. His work includes THz generation and the development of next-generation light sources, such as high-brightness X-ray and gamma-ray sources using plasma-based GeV-scale table-top electron accelerators. In laboratory plasma astrophysics, his interests include studies of astrophysical plasmas, plasma instabilities using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. He has published over sixty international research papers in well-known SCI-indexed peer-reviewed journals. He serves as a reviewer for several leading physics journals and has actively contributed to conferences as a member of scientific and organizing committees. He has also convened and organized international conferences.

Energy Storage and Solid State Materials

This is an interdisciplinary thrust area where researchers are focused on the development of advanced materials for practical energy generation and storage systems. The material research is targeted for use in batteries, fuel cells, solar cells, sensors, supercapacitors and designing of hybridized energy storage devices. This involves integration of advanced physics and chemistry for better understanding and discovery of new phenomena in the area of energy storage and generation materials with application to electric-based transportation. Research group in involved in the following areas:-

  • Synthesis of novel electrode materials and electrolytes for next generation energy storage & generation devices
  • Material exploration for supercapacitors and their hybrids with batteries
  • Transformational synthesis of biofuels from waste/pollutants
  • Synthesis and application of electrocatalysts for HER and ORR reactions
  • Recovery of metals from Energy Storage Devices

Metal Protection and Catalytic Materials

Corrosion is a major problem in industries and it needs to be controlled at source. The conventionally used corrosion inhibitors have proved to be toxic and a hazard for environment. The recent research thus directs towards the synthesis, design, and development of eco-friendly materials to replace conventional toxic chemicals. Presently, various alternatives derived from natural sources are being widely explored to replace toxic corrosion inhibitors. The team is directed towards synthesis, characterization and application of advanced functional coatings for corrosion prevention and control. The other specific goal is to develop catalysts for various important processes to make them efficient and better in comparison to conventional processes by minimizing by-products, energy consumption with improved yield of desired product. Nano and polymeric materials are the heart of any technology in present scenario owing to their versatile properties and tailoring which deem them suitable for a range of applications. The nano based polymer nanocomposites are another class of emerging materials and the researchers are dedicated to tailored synthesis of such advanced functional polymeric and nano-materials along with their characterization for specific use in medicine, energy storage, catalysis, agriculture, sensors, etc. The team is focused on overcoming the synthesis and application challenges by tailoring these materials and their practical transfer to industry or market.
