Specializations – Undergraduate (BDS)
According to the given data, the undergraduate BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) program lacks any official specialisations. Rather it offers thorough instruction in all main spheres of dentistry. Students pick knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for general dental practice—including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases related to teeth, mouth, jaws, and associated tissues—during the course. The comprehensive bds syllabus covers general anatomy, oral pathology, prosthodontics, and endodontics across four academic years leading to the professional degree.
Duration: 4 Years + 1 year internship
Comprising a four-year academic course with a minimum of 240 teaching days each academic year, the undergraduate dental training program producing the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree is set out. Every candidate must do a mandatory one-year paid rotating internship in a dental college following successful completion of the final BDS exam. Completing this internship is required to earn the BDS degree and is a required course of study. Through practical clinical experience in several dental departments, the internship guarantees graduates are ready for general dental practice and community oral health responsibilities. The BDS program runs five years overall, including the internship. This structured bachelor of dental surgery training ensures clinical competency across all dental specialties before degree conferment.

The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is an undergraduate dentistry program that prepares students for a career as dentists. It focuses on identifying, preventing, and treating problems affecting the teeth, gums, and oral cavity. The program combines classroom instruction with practical clinical work.
After earning a BDS degree, graduates can practice as general dentists, dental surgeons, or consultants, in private or public healthcare settings. Other possibilities include starting a private practice, pursuing advanced studies like an MDS, working at research institutions, being employed by firms that produce dental supplies, or teaching at dental schools.
A BDS program leads to a fulfilling career, presenting many different options. Trainees acquire practical clinical experience, a robust theoretical base, and expertise in caring for teeth and gums. The qualification also paves the way for starting your own business, contributing to medical research, and working internationally.
A BDS graduate's pay depends on their experience, area of expertise, and where they work. New graduates in India might make ₹3–6 LPA, but experienced dentists or those with advanced degrees can earn substantially more through clinical work or teaching.
The Bachelor of Dental Surgery program includes courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Dental Materials, Oral Pathology, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, and Public Health Dentistry. Dental graduates in India and internationally have significant career opportunities. They can pursue advanced studies via MDS, find jobs in hospitals or private practices, teach, or explore areas like cosmetic dentistry or implant surgery.
